Assistant Band Director

My name is Erica Cooter, and I am currently the assistant band director at both Chuckey-Doak Middle School and Chuckey-Doak High School.  I am also a graduate student of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and am pursuing my Master of Music in Music Education.  My first experience with teaching was during my 2013-2014 internship in Knox County with the instrumental music programs of Bearden High School, West Valley Middle School, Bearden Elementary School, and Maynard Elementary School, in partial fulfillment of my master's degree program.

I have always admired teachers and the work that they do, so becoming one has been something I have wished to do for most of my life.  I was never sure of what I would eventually teach, but as a high school senior planning her college career, I decided that music education was the perfect fit.  Why?  Since I was a child, I had either been around music or involved with it, from singing in the choir at church to playing bass clarinet in the Chuckey-Doak High School band program.  (Fun fact: I was one of the first students to go through the Chuckey-Doak band program, and I was the first drum major of the CDHS Marching Band!)  Music is a gigantic part of who I am, and I can't imagine life without it.  I want my students to share my love of music not simply because it is enjoyable, but because it strengthens one's overall learning experience as an educated and well-rounded individual.

As an undergraduate at the University of Tennessee, I was involved in many organizations and ensembles including Collegiate NAfME, Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity, Sigma Phi Lambda Christian Sorority, UT Wind Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Pride of the Southland Marching Band, and Lady Vols Basketball Pep Band.  I am currently a member of the following professional organizations: National Band Association, East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, Tennessee Music Education Association, and Tennessee Education Association.  Aside from practicing clarinet and other instruments, my hobbies include DIY crafting, reading, playing video games on my Xbox, and cuddling with my dog Bindi.  I love spending time with my friends and family, too!
